Reasons To Participate In A Writing Contest

I have never entered into any writing contest, perhaps because I was not ready or was afraid to do so. However, since I am now more focused on writing and learning all I can from different sources, I think it is time I did. I thought about the reasons to enter into a writing contest. This is what I came up with:

1. It is something new and different to try
2. Can be fun and let's you be creative
3. It is free to enter (for the most part, some contests do charge a fee for entering)
4. May lead to other things: a story idea or a way to start freelancing
5. Might let you know how good (or not) you are
6. Makes you feel good that you are doing something with what you write
7. Possibility of winning a contest
8. Recognition
9. Monetary award or other prize
10.Another way to share your writing with other writers

What are some reasons you might participate in a writing contest?

These are all great reasons to enter contests. Something just as fun and enlightening as entering is to volunteer to judge a contest. You will be amazed at how much you can learn from critiquing manuscripts and deciding where they fall on the winner's scale. It's an invaluable experience, especially before you enter a contest yourself.

Thank you for your comment. I had not thought about being a judge in a writing contest, this is a very good idea

Your list really covers everything. Any chance to write is worthwhile. It would be great to enter a contest which allows me to stretch my writing into a new direction. For example, maybe write a scene for a play, or song lyrics. It's a good way to exercise those writing muscles. Do you know of any reputable site that lists ongoing contests? Thanks.

Those are good suggestions for contests and it would allow you to expand into any type of writing, not just novel writing. The sites I would recommend would be the ones that are associated with the three most popular writing magazines: The Writer, Writer's Digest and Poets and Writers.(the web sites are on my blog under writing websites). If you go to their websites you can sign up for their free newsletter that they send to your email. On the site itself you can search for contests.

I will also be doing a post today on some contests that I came across that were of interest and that I am participating in.
