Three Rules Of Writing I Live By

1. Write what you know and research the rest.

2. Take writing as an opportunity and an open door to new worlds and experiences.

3. Be the main character of your story, so that your writing is real and embellish on the details to make the story come alive.

What rules of writing do you live by?

I'm pretty big on avoiding dialogue tags where possible. If In include one, it's because I must or I'll lose the reader, and/or I try to couple it with a "showing" character action.

Best Wishes Galen.

I would change number three to start with "Become the main character of your story . . ." I'm too boring to be a main character. :)

I try to keep advice from Kurt Vonegut in mind as I write.

"Every sentence should do one of two things--reveal character or advance action."

These are great. I love to live vicariously through my MC. That's part of the fun, no?

Very good rules Ana. I would add this one: "Find your voice and honor it throughout."

Role reversal then, you live through the eyes of your main character. Great advice, thank you.

Yes, that is definitely part of the fun. Develop your main character to be someone you may have always wanted to be. I would add some of my characteristics and qualities, and throw in some more fun and interesting factors.

I like this. Thank you. It is very important that once you find your voice, you stick to it.

Well said, Ana. My # 1 writing rule is to write what I know, and also to write what I am passionate about. It's really hard (& not fun at all) to write about something to which you feel no personal connection.
