Veteran's serve our country in times of need.  They are there for all of us when we need them and most people do not even realize that they are there.  The sad fact is that those who have served also have developed many different illnesses from the time they have served including diseases like mesothelioma and PTSD.  Most veteran's are also not aware that they are eligible for medical benefits through the Veteran's Administration that will pay for most medical expenses; like medical insurance.

Mesothelioma and the Military
Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer that typically attacks the lungs.  It is a debilitating disease that takes the lives of most patients who have been diagnosed.  Early detection is the key to finding the disease early and getting the treatment needed.  Exposure to asbestos and asbestos related products are said to be the main reason for diagnosis of mesothelioma cancer and in recent years, it has been determined that some of the piping in ships used throughout the Vietnam era were one of the main causes for the disease in veteran's.  Unfortunately, most vets did not find out until it was too late and the disease had gone too far that the exposure was even there.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
PTSD, or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a mental disorder that is usually caused by some form of traumatic experience.  This disease has been around since the Vietnam ear and was often referred to as "Shell Shock."  This disease is directly associated with the soldiers who fight on the front line and in air attacks in various wartime maneuvers.  Many veteran's have been witness to hostile environments, been shot at and have watched their friends be killed.  This makes for a traumatic experience that does not just go away once they come home.  This is one of the main forms of illnesses that troops come home with when fighting in most conflicts around the globe.  The military offers many different treatment options that are covered by the government to help our troops to get the psychological help they need to get through.

Medical Coverage Through the VA
The VA, or Veteran's Administration, provides healthcare at no cost to veterans and prior military personnel.  While this is not a well-advertised form of healthcare, anyone who has been in the military is eligible for the coverage when they go to a VA clinic or provider in their area.  It covers everything from basic check-ups to surgical procedures that are either a result of military service or not; it is just one thing that the military provides to former personnel as a thank you for your service.

In a day where medical benefits can be the difference between life and death, it is good to know that the military continues to take care of past, present and future veteran's through the medical benefits program offered by the VA.  This service comes to any veteran with no out of pocket expense, no copays and prescription coverage.  The VA will also pay for any travel related expenses should the veteran need to travel out of the area for care.
